Steve Newlin art @ 09:03 pm

I don't know why I have the nagging need to draw Steve Newlin all weepy and vulnerable, but.... yeah guess I'm just feeling angsty since he went away :P And *evil grin* my imagination kind of goes awry seeing him all pouty LOL! I got some new paper (Bristol, as suggested by a fellow artist as well as getting a darker graphite pencil. The pencil darkness was great, but it's blending quality is crap! I had to keep reworking this to get it right, and there are still a few blaring mistakes (that I notice that makes me cringe 0o) Other than that, I like it :P

Aeon Flux The Animated Series. I love the dynamic between Aeon and Tevor Goodchild. Have you seen the animated series?

I saw this by Nyan27 and it just inspired me. LOL

I don't know the show out of just hearing about it, but that pic is pretty hot :D You know Jester would also make for a great rare fandom ;)

Aeon Flux started out on MTV's Liquid Television as shorts then became a series. The movie did didn't do the series must justice.
Peter Chung, the creator also worked on Rugrats as well. :-D

Yes, Jester would be perfect, I was hoping to be able to submit one Aeon/Trevor story and one Jester/Princess story if I can.

Have you anything planned?

This looks pretty darn good. He looks like he's about to be tortured/punished. Yum. XD Is he all pleady? I hope so. I would tell him "Too bad."

Bristol paper is Awwwwesooooooome!! Darker graphite pencils are a pain in my ass, too. >=/ I know it's dumb, but I favor the cheapo clicky pencils, though I don't do much shading anymore. When I do, I use blending stumps - have you tried those yet? They're great fun! I like the soft ones over the peely ones best.

It was a very fun scene... I tried to find it, and this was as close as I got

Check out the first two minutes of it to see where this and the last pic came from ;)

Bristol is nice :) I think a better brand dark graphite would do better. These ones were too cheap :/

Those blenders are awesome! I actually just discovered them about a year ago =D (soft all the way unles you are trying to get a sharp detail

::swoons:: A man in tears, I tell ya! WOO!! Even if they're fake tears, they're still great! Thank you so much for finding this and posting it for me!

You know, when I was in art school the cheap products were just fine. Now though? Nope. You gotta pay an arm and a leg to be a starving artist these days. Of course, few things are well made these days.

Aren't they?! That's right, we DID talk about this a long while back. I'd forgotten. Yea, the peely ones are great for sharp detail, but I prefer using dry reed pens or the side of small piece of cardboard over them to blend with. Peely stumps aren't strong enough for me, they always crumple halfway through. I guess I'm a brute. LOL

It's the pathetic whine that gets me *evil grin* This scene latched me to him like a moth to a flame! LOL! I'm glad you liked the scene as it took me forever to find it oO :P

Art can be an excrutiatingly expensive hobby :/ I do agree though, the cheap stuff is fine until you notice the difference in what you can create

I'he never used a dry reed pen..... I honestly don't even know how to :P

Awwww, thank you so so much!!!! ::hugs you::

Well I don't always use a dry reed pen in the conventional way. In this instance I'm just using it as a blending stump - the sharp ends help give a more exact, sharp edge to shading. But you have to be careful because with some charcoal it can make shiny lines on it from pushing down the charcoal. Doesn't always do it, and the price of the charcoal isn't what matters. I honestly have figured out how to tell the difference, so I usually do a test with the charcoal and paper before I try this method.

To use a reed pen the traditional way, just get a bottle of India ink [careful: it's permanent. It'll stay on the fingers 1-3 days] and a paper cup. Squirt some of the ink into the cup and mix with a tiny amount of water - this'll be your lighter shade. For black you can either dip into the bottle or pour some into a cup and don't add water. Dip the end of the pen with the hole in it into the ink and then draw. Play around with how long the ink lasts before you need to dip again. You can also get a sumi reed brush for color washes.

Here is a great instructional video I found for you: http://www.jerrysartarama.com/art-lessons/Medium/Pen-and-Ink/Pen-and-Ink-Using-a-Reed-Pen-and-Ink-in-Figure-Drawing.html

And another: http://www.jerrysartarama.com/art-lessons/Medium/Pen-and-Ink/Pen-and-Ink-How-to-Control-Strokes-Using-Sumi-E-Brushes.html

What you can do with these tools:

Here is a site full of traditional Chinese landscape paintings: http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/clpg/hd_clpg.htm

European usage: http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/drawing/pen-and-ink-drawings.htm

Modern usage: http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/reed-pen

The great thing about using a permanent ink like India ink is that you can build up your tones. Every layer, when dry, is permanent. And it has some permanency even before it's totally dry, so you can go over it with more ink w/o worrying about ruining what you've already done and add shadows, outline something, etc!

In the videos Bill uses some expensive pens and brushes. You don't have to. The cheaper pens and brushes work well, too, and they're usually around or under $5, and you can often find a whole set of them for under $20. India ink will run you around $5, and in art school I was going through 2 bottles a year. Big whoop, $10.

I have used India ink before, and I checked out the tutorials, that guy is totally a perv LOL! I notice he made sure to give details to the bush and tits while leaving none for the hands or face *eye roll* Other than that, they were good ;)
